Plastic surgery blog: C-section closures “may be ” best using sutures instead of staples Monday, Feb 8 2010

Larger babies have resulted in more c-section deliveries

As the number of C-sections continue to climb in the US, the method of incision closure has been the focus of a new study. According to the Los Angeles Times c-section incisions that were closed with staples experienced more wound complications than those closed with sutures. Complications included wound openings as well as infections.  C-sections are a more intense and painful recovery than natural childbirth. It is also more difficult for a c-section patient to achieve a flat stomach following surgery.

Dr Kim meets with many patients post -partum who have undergone a caesarean section. Many of whom are disgusted by their abdomen which seems to never flatten even if they are at or near their ideal body weight. Dr Kim explains that the reason c-section patients have such difficulty with the flattening of the stomach is two-fold.  First, loose and lax skin can not be exercised away. Secondly, the abdominal muscles have been cut and  it is almost impossible to flatten the abdomen with excercise or diet alone.  The good news is that Dr Kim can perform an abdominoplasty which strengthens the muscle and removes loose and lax skin as well.  Abdominoplasty is almost inevitable for c-section patients if they want a flat stomach. After recovery from a c-section an abdominoplasty recovery is uusually  more tolerable in comparison.

Plastic surgery blog:Searching on the internet Saturday, Feb 6 2010

Information on the web can prove valuable

Technology has allowed us to surf the web in hopes of finding everything from products to services to pen pals to love. The Los Angeles times reported that people who surf the web for happiness are often disappointed. Surfing the internet for long periods of time can actually lead to depression according ton the article. It is rather easy to get caught in the allure of the internet. Information is delivered instantly and knowledge gives the illusion of power.  Surfing the internet for plastic surgery information has quickly become the method of choice.

Dr Kim receives most of his new patients by referral, yet many prospective patients will review Dr Kim’s website to gather more information. Dr Kim’s website provides detailed information about many procedures like breast augmentation, liposuction, abdominolasty, facelifts, and more. Dr Kim advises  patients to review websites carefully but to be careful not to review so many at one time that the information becomes blurred and confusing. Most importantly, it is the in person consultation that matters the most.

$500 drawing Friday, Feb 5 2010

The drawing has been delayed as out of the 1500 or so e-mails that went out only about 10% were actually received. Due to spam blocking programs the holiday card seemed to be the best way to get the info out to everyone. So you may receive another card soon. We are in the process of updating our e-mail list. But the drawing will be held very shortly and I am thinking of video taping it.

Plastic surgery blog: Will you be ready to wear the new Kardashian – Bebe line of clothing? Thursday, Feb 4 2010

The mini skirt is back in style

In Los Angeles there will be no shortage of women running to buy the new Kardashian-Bebe line of clothes, due in stores by the end of the month. According to the Los Angeles times the clothing line is heavy on the dresses and of course the dresses are short. Wearing short skirts can be very tricky for women who are wearing these skirts in real life.

Dr David Kim points out that the thighs can look very large in a short skirt. The pencil type of skirts that are part of this new clothing line are made to fit the body tightly.  Dr Kim recommends liposuction of the inner and outer thigh if there are saddle bags and fat pads that cause the inner thighs to rub together.  Dr Kim carefully sculpts the outer thigh in an effort not to remove too much fat. The goal is for the thigh to appear natural and avoid divots in the skin. The inner thigh is also a very delicate area for liposuction. Dr Kim consults with his patients having liposuction and helps them to realize that the surgery has the best results the first time it is performed. It is crucial that an experienced doctor perform liposuction to decrease the likilihood of touch ups in the future.

Plastic surgery blog: Cardio excercise is easy to stick to when it is fun Wednesday, Feb 3 2010

Night club cardio a new way to excercise

The list of creative ways for people to excercise and stay in shape seems endless. It is fairly easy to become bored with routine excercise. The Los Angeles Times recently reported on a new craze called nightclub cardio. It is based on the concept that dance is excercise. The creator has found that the atmosphere of the nightclub where the classes are held helps people concentrate on the fun that they are having instead of the excercise they are doing. The environment also allows for entire families to work out in the nightclub together.

Dr Kim realizes with a practice based in Beverly Hills the importance of appearance and attire. Excercising in the nightclub will not need the same hot  and sexy outfit dancing in the nightclub will.  Nightclub attire looks best on a toned body. Nice cleavage is a nice bonus also. Dr Kim consults with patients about breast augmentation and liposuction often. If the patient is in good health these procedures can be performed together. Breast augmentation will help to create a cleavage line that will enhance the body beautifully. Liposuction of the abdomen and possibly thighs will help create a more smooth and toned body.

Plastic surgery blog: The five second rule re-visited? Tuesday, Feb 2 2010

Food on the floor is it safe?

It is pretty unbelievable that the five second rule (applies to food dropped on the floor) would actually be researched for validation, but…The Los Angeles Times published an article that scientifically looked at the five second rule. They experimented with different tpes of food and timed how long it would take for the food to pick up dangerous germs. The most interesting thing was the conclusion: we really have a 30 second window of opportunity to eat the food that falls on the floor.

While this article is largely tongue and cheek, the reality is that safety and cleanliness in a surgery suite, and during the recovery period is crucial.  An accredited surgical facility is a requirement for board certified plastic surgeons like Dr Kim. His facility meet all of the standards of a hospital. Dr Kim also shares with his patients having surgery like abdominoplasty or liposuction, in which there may be drainage, the importance of keeping the area surrounding the incision clean using antibacterial soap. Also frequent hand washing when changing dressings is extremely important in order to avoid infection.

Plastic surgery blog: Obesity and the blame game Monday, Feb 1 2010

The blame for obesity is shared by many

It seems as though Americans have a deep seeded desire to blame the obesity epidemic on something or somebody. According to the Los Angeles times there is plenty of blame to pass around. A fat acceptance organization insists in the article that there is no problem. They believe that many of their members are healthy and exercise regularly.  The article explores the “sin tax” that would make people pay more if they insist on eating “unhealthy” foods. The only undeniable conclusion the article comes to is that something must be done.

Dr Kim has found that the post massive weight loss patient is forgotten once they loose the weight.  This can be very discouraging because they can be left with large amount of sagging skin.  Dr Kim can take care of the lose skin with abdominoplasty, facelifts, breast lifts, and in some cases brachioplasty.   Dr Kim is adamant about patients doing their research and making sure that they are in good hands and having surgery performed in a safe setting. He also cautions against the temptation to have multiple surgeries at one time. This should be decided on a case by case basis.

Plastic surgery blog: Over 70 a little weight is good for you Friday, Jan 29 2010

Seniors are living longer and looking better than ever!

A new study that appeared in the Los Angeles Times recently informed readers that patients who are seniors should not diet down too much. Actually, it found that patients with a few extra pounds had increased mortality rates. Seniors are more active now than ever before.

Dr Kim consults with seniors in his Beverly Hills practice who are healthy and vivacious. They are concerned because their faces and bodies do not look as young as they feel. So, Dr Kim helps them decide which procedures would benefit them most.  Dr Kim takes into consideration the patients health, lifestyle, and support system. If the patient is having procedures like a facelift or blephroplasty moving around after surgery may be difficult.  The patient will need to be sure to walk around after surgery. Shielding a senior patient from an accidental fall is more of a post surgery issue. Dr Kim will assess if the patient is a candidate for multiple procedures performed at the same time.  While patients often desire to do all of their procedures at once, Dr Kim is committed to safety first and foremost.

Plastic surgery blog:Breast Feeding Rates Tied to White Women’s Body Mass Index Tuesday, Jan 26 2010

Breast feeding has benefits and plastic surgery can help women to regain their shape

Breast feeding has long been the preferred choice of medical professionals pointing to benefits for both mother and baby. A recent article published in the LA Times reviewed a study that found white women of a normal weight most likely to breast feed, and for a longer time than obese white women and black women. The study concluded that obese white women may find it more difficult to breast feed. Black women showed no clear connection between breast-feeding and their weight. The study added that obese white women and black women may need more encouragement and education to increase the number of women choosing to breast feed.

Dr Kim consults with many women after breast-feeding. Often they are discouraged because they have breast that have lost volume and the skin seems thin and saggy. The breast have lost volume and the breast tissue is settled in the bottom part of the breast. In some cases the nipple and areola have been stretched. Dr Kim recommends a breast lift .This allows him to reposition the nipple to the center of the breast. He then recommends an implant to add fullness to the top of the breast. Patients are thrilled as they can now wear clothing choices that were previously out of the realm of possibility.

Plastic surgery blog: Does the suit make the man? Monday, Jan 25 2010

Can the suit make the man?

There is an old  saying that a man cannot look bad in a suit. The LA times highlighted Neil Patrick Harris in a beautiful Louis Voitton tuxedo and yes he looked amazing! Suits are a great accessory for any man but what if the body is not sleek and slender?

Dr Kim a board certified plastic surgeon located in Beverly Hills consults with men concerned about their psychique .  He explains to them that even in an expensive suit a big stomach will take away from the overall appearance and image of the man. He instructs men to be sure that when they measure their waist that it should be at the belly button and around.  If the waist is not firm and toned,  Dr Kim may recommend liposuction of the waist. He will carefully sculpt the upper and lower abdomen, Then he sculpts the crest or love handles. Lastly he sculpts the lower back to create a toned a svelete looking waist.  Most of Dr Kims patients tell him that they love their new and toned waistline and that their friends think that they must have been dieting and exercising heavily to achieve such a beautiful result.
