Plastic surgery blog: AMA leader applaudes dropping cosmetic surgery tax Wednesday, Dec 23 2009

A cosmetic tax would have been unjust

Those of us in the industry knew the proposed tax was a long shot. The LA Times article covered the favorable reaction from the AMA president.

Dr  Kim had made his thoughts well known on the proposed tax since it was first announced. More importantly he used  the  opportunity to educate his patients and the lay public about plastic surgery. The main issue with the proposed bill was the identification of which procedures are cosmetic and which are reconstructive. The  insurance companies can not agree  so how would the government? If a 14 year-old girl has a breast reduction because her breast are medically causing pain is that cosmetic?  Does it depend on if the insurance company pays the bill? What about post massive weight loss patients who have bodylifts, abdominoplsty, brachioplasy and even facelifts? Many have  pounds of excess skin that causes painful rashes and itching. Are these surgeries cosmetic and taxable? As you can see this is impossible to decide fairly. Worst of all, would  patients private records be subject to IRS audit? Fortunately, we do not have to worry about this issue now. It is important that plastic surgery patients and non-plastic surgery patients stay knowledgeable on this bill. It can always rear its ugly head again.

Plastic surgery blog: Muscles could be linked to brain power Tuesday, Dec 22 2009

Watch out! He may be more than just "hot"!

Los Angeles Times article followed a study that found men who are muscular may be smarter than average. This could be another reason for men to seek a muscular and  strong body.

Dr Kim offers body contouring procedures for men that help them to achieve the body genetics would not allow them to achieve.  Dr Kim can use liposuction to sculpt a much more fit body. The men must at first be a good candidate. They should be at or near their ideal body weight. If there is fat in the chest area Dr Kim can liposuction the chest area. If there is breast tissue  also, then Dr Kim will recommend gynecomastia surgery which actually removes the breast tissue also. The abdomen is a common area for men to have trouble keeping fit and trim. Dr Kim can liposuction the entire waist including the love handles and lower back. Following surgery the patient is placed in an abdominal binder which should be worn at al times for four weeks after surgery. The final liposuction result is visible in six months.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Childhood obesity should be addressed aggressively Monday, Dec 21 2009

Parents should embrace plastic surgery as an option for their obese teens

Dr Kim is aware of the expectation of those in the popular zip code 90210 where his practice is located. While it is true that the majority of the population is within their ideal body weight, there  are both parents and children that would be diagnosed as obese.  A recent article searched for who to blame the childhood obesity epidemic on. Dr Kim has found that a consultation with parents helps parents understand the role plastic surgery can play in helping children loose weight.  Teen boys often suffer from gynecomastia . This is excessive breast tissue and fat in the  chest area. In some  boys the breast are extremely large and can be seen through a plain t-shirt. This often leads to the boys not participating in gym and gaining excessive weight due to the lack of excercise.  Teen girls often  have excessive breast tissue and fat also.  Breast reduction surgery helps to reduce the breast to a more proportionate size. This often help to ease the pain that many patients suffer from. Pain in the shoulders, lower back and numbness in the fingers are common symptoms. The  girls are able to now excercise which was not possible before. Parents should embrace plastic surgery  as an option for helping their teens get into the game.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Visualize a New You! Saturday, Dec 19 2009

Sitting in front of the TV can pack on the pounds and steal your motivation

This just in-it may seem pretty obvious but the LA Times noted that those who watch less TV burn more calories. The article suggested that cutting your television time in half can burn up to 119 calories. The article based this on the fact that the average adult watches television up to 5 hours daily. This may seem like a lot of television but many work, from home and sit in front of the television until bedtime. For those couch lovers the article suggest doing a relaxing activity such as reading, writing, or even talking on the phone. It takes much less energy to sit and view television so we  aren’t burning too many calories by remaining still and watching our favorite prime time show.

Dr. Kim sympathizes with the struggles many have over weight and burning calories. He has performed body contouring procedures such as liposuction and tummy tucks   for patients seeking a thinner physique. For those glued to the television it may be challenging to make decisions to get the body we dreamed of. It often times helps to visualize the transformation Dr. Kim can offer patients. His before and after gallery shows amazing results of the liposuction and tummy tuck procedures. His testimonial section reveals the happiness and satisfaction felt by those patients who decided to make a positive change to their image. Contact Dr. Kim today to see yourself transformed.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Melatonin sleep in peace? Friday, Dec 18 2009

Not enough sleep? It will show on your face

Supplements are all the rage especially in Southern California. It is easy to believe that supplements are all natural and not considered drugs. Melatonin is a popular supplement used to help people sleep. A recent Los Angeles Times article reviewed the benefits of  melatonin.  While the article pointed out that there is a relaxing benefit to melatonin, it stop short of touting it as a sleeping aid for adults.

Sleep deprivation can cause the face to look aged and weary. Nowhere is this more clear than in the eyes. Rubbing the eyes when feeling tired is natural. Unfortunately, it stretches the skin and the eyelids become  droopy. Bags are formed beneath the eyes, and the area around the entire eye can seem swollen.  Dr Kim recommends a blephroplasty to revitalize the  eye area. Blephroplasty can take care of both the top lid and the bags beneath the eyes.  The recovery is about 5-7 days. The forehead can also have a furrow between the eyes which can make the patient look as though they are frowning and upset, Botox and or   a browlift corrects this. Dr Kim warns patients that if they have surgery but do not increase the amount of sleep they are getting the same concerns will re-surface.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Smoking is never a good thing Thursday, Dec 17 2009

Smoking and plastic surgery present unique challenges

In California we have been able to enjoy smoke free environments for some time.  Few people think about “on stage” smoking . The Los Angeles Times covered a story out of Denver, Colorado where they are proposing a ban on theater smoking on stage. The Los Angeles Theater community was not very concerned as they use herbal cigarettes in their productions.

Dr Kim like other board certified plastic surgeons, educates patients on  the negative impact of cigarette smoking. To begin with, no one would dispute that cigarette smoking is a major contributor to premature aging of the face. The skin becomes wrinkled sooner and the lips form deep small lines from pursing the lips around the cigarette.  Also there is a darkening of the lip over time which is irreversible.  These are just aesthetic negative drawbacks. Healthwise ,there are a host of medical conditions directly related to smoking.

When  Dr Kim does have a patient that smokes he allows extra time to counsel the patient about more risk the patient may experience due to their smoking. One of these risk is delayed wound healing. This is most common with abdominoplasty, facelifts, brachioplasty, and thighlifts. The incisions sometimes take longer to heal but Dr Kim helps his patients through the process with compassion and empathy. The best case scenario for smokers is to quit before plastic surgery and never light up again.

Plastic Surgery Blog: For women, standing out- its an inside job Wednesday, Dec 16 2009

Women are happy to stand out among others after plastic surgery

Women tend to be less likely to command the spotlight than their male counterparts. A recent article in the Orange County Register suggested that women are not conditioned to “command the room”. Dr Kim finds that as a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills few things a woman can do other than plastic surgery will boost self confidence and self-esteem. Dr Kim and his staff notice the change in patients once they have their plastic surgery. For instance, once a patient has a breast augmentation they will usually wear more revealing and fitted tops. Their confidence soars because not only are  they able to wear clothes that they could wear before but they are curvaceous as well.

Patients that have had a facelift are also usually very out going after surgery. With a more youthful look they no longer hide their smile. The scarf around the neck is no longer necessary and low-cut blouses are now an option.  Once patients are comfortable with who they are .Plastic surgery is just the right step to get them out and the center of the party. Find out if plastic surgery with Dr Kim’s right for you.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Privacy protected Tuesday, Dec 15 2009

Protecting patients privacy is our committment

Plastic surgeons were among the first physicians  to adopt HIPPA guidelines.  The nature of the speciality calls for maintaining confidentiality. Protecting privacy was recently at issue in an LA Times article that looked at prescription drugs and the confidentiality of patients. The article  reported that while names were not released the behavior of the prescribing doctors was in fact shared.

Dr Kim has a steady flow of patients from all walks of life. Located in Beverly Hills, it is not uncommon for Dr Kim to treat patients with a public presence. Dr Kim and his staff are committed to privacy and confidentiality for their patients.  If patients are scheduled for facelift, rhinoplasty, otoplasty or other procedures that will clearly identify their face, Dr Kim and staff are careful to remind patients that before and after photos are protected and never shown to other patients with out express permission from the patient. If the patients photos are of the body, abdominomplasty, liposuction, or other body procedures, Dr Kim advises patients to remove all jewelry or any identifying marks. Once again, he reiterates that before and after photos are not shown without the patients consent. Referrals are a large part of Dr Kim’s practice and patient privacy is extended to all patients.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Communication with your plastic surgeon helps to make the right rhinoplasty decision Saturday, Dec 12 2009

A beautiful nose is possible with Dr Kim's rhinoplasty skill

Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) carries many doubts and fears from prospective patients. There are some plastic surgeons that no longer perform the surgery due to the fact that overall rhinoplasty has the highest re-operation rate.  Dr  Kim has not had that experience in his practice. Dr Kim makes every effort to communicate with rhinoplasty patients about their desires after plastic surgery.  It is important for rhinoplasty patients to understand the limitations of their existing nose that may affect their plastic surgery result. Some patients have a  nose with a very prominent bridge and a flat tip. Dr Kim may recommend reducing the bridge and adding a nasal implant to give the nose a slimmer appearance.  Dr Kim also treats patients with the more common large pointed tip. Dr Kim uses his artistic skill and ability to actually shape the tip and create a natural looking nose. A nose that is long and pointy should be shaped not just reduced. Dr Kim ’s rhinoplasty patients enjoy the benefits of  his artistic  skill because their nose  after plastic surgery looks very natural. His patients give many rhinoplasty referrals. The rhinoplasty decision for them is much easier, Dr Kim is the obvious choice.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Holiday Eating in Beverly Hills Saturday, Dec 12 2009

Don't let the holidays rob you of your bikini body

The 90210 famous zip code is unlikely to be associated with holiday overeating.  A LA times article reported that “”food holidays”  are about the food but other factors come into play as to whether weight gain is the result.  Dr Kim is accustom to the spike in consultations after the holidays. Patients are anxious  to create a new image following the holidays especially if they have packed on a few pounds. Patients seeking  breast augmentation prefer first of the year for consultations because of the perfect timing for summer. Many times it is a new beginning for patients and some tell Dr Kim that they are using Christmas or holiday money to pay for their surgery. Others are anticipating a tax return and will be using those funds for their surgery.  Dr Kim encourages patients in their first consultation to consider other procedures that may allow them to achieve the look  that they desire . For instance if they are preparing  for a bikini body with breast augmentation perhaps they may benefit from liposuction of the abdomen, love handles and lower back at the same time. It is a good idea to check and see if it makes sense medically, financially, and with the time available for recovery. Dr Kim and his staff will help patients decide which procedures are best.
